Pawan Kalyan’s latest hit, They Call Him OG, is all set for its grand OTT debut after performing solidly in theatres. Released on September 25 and grossing well over INR 300 crores, the film has performed strongly across several South Indian territories.
According to multiple online reports, They Call Him OG may arrive on Netflix on October 23, just four weeks after its theatrical release. This comes after Netflix acquired the movie’s digital streaming rights for a whopping INR 92 crore. The streamer has been implementing a strategy of investing heavily in major titles, but with a shorter theatrical window of only four weeks, and it seems they’ve followed the same approach with the latest Pawan Kalyan starrer.
The October 23 OTT release seems like an amazing deal for online viewers. However, a large section of the audience believes it threatens the exclusivity of the theatrical experience. Situations like these are unusual, especially considering that big-budget films in Northern India often enjoy a 6- to 8-week theatrical run before their OTT premiere.
That said, the South Indian film industry has proved to be far more flexible in this regard. They Call Him OG’s choice of a mere four-week window, particularly given its super-hit status and worldwide collection exceeding INR 300 crores, sends a clear message: the massive OTT deal is not just a top priority but also a necessity.
Yes, we have to admit that the film’s box office collections slowed down after the first two weeks, and Netflix’s INR 92 crore acquisition likely ensures the movie’s profitability.
But the question remains — at what cost to the theatrical experience?
For audiences, knowing that a blockbuster will be available to stream on a platform they already subscribe to, in the comfort of their homes, just one month after release, is a huge incentive to skip the cinema altogether. Why spend on premium tickets, parking, and concessions when the same viewing experience is just a few weeks away? This mindset fundamentally devalues the exclusivity of the big screen.
In an era where blockbusters are meant to be grand, communal spectacles, the early shift to streaming, even for a film as successful as They Call Him OG, remains a double-edged sword for the future of cinema. Stay tuned for more updates.
