We have been seeing a rise in stories that come from culturally rooted backgrounds and talk about regional folk tales. Tumbbaad, Bramhayugum, Munjya, and Kantara are just some of these stories.
Pradeep Maddali brings us Vikkatakavi—another fascinating folk legacy from Telangana narrated through the story of a detective. Set in the backdrop of the 1970s, the story unfolds with a blend of mystery, folklore and rationalism, engaging the audience. Despite its promising start and bold thematic explorations, the show falters in its production value and final act, leaving a mixed impression on viewers.
But do you know why the show got a special screening at this year’s International Film Festival of India?
The show fabulously portrays an authentic image of Telangana’s cultural and linguistic identity. Director Pradeep Maddali and writer Teja Desraj did a commendable job weaving the local dialect and folk beliefs into the storyline. The addition of Telangana’s rich traditions with a bio-war narrative is something exceptional, adding depth and authenticity to the setting.
Additionally, streaming the show on Zee5, a nationwide platform not only increases its ability to be seen by a wider audience but also spotlights the regional stories it wants to convey.
Vikkatakavi is more than just a detective story. It perfectly blended regional folklore into the detective story, enriching the plot and providing a fresh narrative from the generic detective tropes.
