Controversy is like a magnet attracting viewers’ curiosity. Except, of course, with Kangana Ranaut and her upcoming film “Emergency”, things get a little more complicated.
Kangana is said to be the self-proclaimed controversy magnet. She has almost a natural flair for stirring the pot, and her unabashed, risk-taking approach to commenting on sensitive topics seems to have brought her as many admirers as disparagers. Controversy is a double-edged sword for a film and certainly true for Kangana Ranaut’s “Emergency”. This could work in favour of “Emergency” because the way she depicts this tumultuous period of Indian history during 1975 would set a raisin for curiosity in people’s eyes.
Portraying the affairs of history and especially the ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, it had to stand at the receiving end of criticism and banning demands from various sections.
On the other hand, controversy does generate buzz and people are naturally curious to know more. It may lead people to the theatres simply out of pure fascination. Controversy may lead to much debate and discussion, thus keeping the film on people’s minds for a longer period. This increased visibility will indeed translate into more box office revenue.
Kangana’s films have always worked on the curiosity generated by controversy. Who can forget Manikarnika? However, in the face of several hurdles, it managed to pull in a decent crowd. Her star power and storyline mixed well together
It’s, however, a give-and-take thing. Kangana’s polarizing personality might also alienate a section of viewers. Some will miss the film, purely and simply because of her presence. But if the trailer and the initial reviews are gripping enough, they might just overlook their biases.
Overall, controversy on its own could help Emergency gain traction. Naturally, the focus would next be on the story and how to tell it. If it’s a good one, Kangana might be able to capitalize on the intrigue and win at the box office.
