Here’s Why We Need Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2

Here’s Why We Need Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2

Ewan McGregor returned as the titular Jedi in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series (2022). Despite its flaws, the Star Wars fanbase welcomed the show and its leading man with open arms. The series was also a streaming hit. However, we are yet to get an official announcement from either Lucasfilm or Disney regarding the renewal of the show for Season 2.

Disney promoted Obi-Wan Kenobi as a miniseries before its streaming release. However, McGregor strongly believes that there are still plenty of Kenobi’s stories that should come out. The Scottish actor played the younger version of Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, taking over the role from Alec Guinness. He returned to the role in the spinoff Obi-Wan Kenobi, 17 years after he last played the character.

McGregor recently sat down with Variety and discussed the big highlights of his career. When asked about Obi-Wan Kenobi’s future in the Star Wars franchise, the actor disclosed that he would love to get in the Jedi robes again to play the iconic Star Wars character. He also believes that there are many stories left to tell, which should fill the gap between the Kenobi spinoff and Episode IV: A New Hope. This is what he said:

“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”

Considering how the Obi-Wan Kenobi series ended, Lucasfilm has a brilliant opportunity to bridge the gap between the spinoff and Episode IV. Moreover, another lightsaber battle between the Jedi protagonist and Darth Vader makes sense. Another duel between them could bestow a chance to delve deeper into the characters’ motivations and inner struggles. How has Obi-Wan evolved since their last encounter? What has Darth Vader learned about himself and the Force?

McGregor’s Kenobi also managed to reconnect with the Force during the final moments of the Disney+ spinoff. His bond with the Force weakened after the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, as Order 66 and the destruction of the Jedi Temple by Anakin Skywalker left him heartbroken and shattered his faith in his former padawan. But he managed to find some amount of redemption as the series reached its culmination. Plus, we witnessed the Force ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) appearing in front of him. Given the brilliant character development of Kenobi in the Disney+ series, it’s possible that in Season 2, he might reconnect with other popular Jedis as well. Stay tuned for more updates.
