Tom Cruise has been very well known for his various action films and stunts that he performs himself. Be it Mission Impossible or Top Gun series, he has always delivered breathtaking action sequences that have enthralled the audience. But sometimes he deviates from his usual action roles and plays some unique characters that blow our minds. One such film where he deviates from his usual image is Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
The film is based on a 1926 novella Dream Story (Traumnovelle) by Arthur Schnitzler. It revolves around the life of a young doctor (Tom Cruise), his wife (Nicole Kidman) and his exploration of the world full of lust. The protagonist gets to know of his wife’s old desire to cheat on him, he becomes disappointed from it. Later he embarks on a night-long adventure discovering a secret society which holds a masked orgy in a mansion.
He is haunted by his experience in the gathering and feels guilty of it. Later he finds out the man from whose shop he had rented his mask and costume has his daughter sold to sex-slavery. His friend is further overdosed with drugs and dies. He is later intimidated by the members of the secret society that further maddens him. Finally he confesses everything to his wife and the film ends in a rather abrupt note.
The film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and is considered as one of his best films ever. Kubrick himself declared it as the best film he has ever made. Kubrick died of a heart attack six days after he had shown the final cut for the film to Warner Bros. This makes it the last film that he directed. The film obviously due to the theme it engages with, has a lot of explicit scenes, but it is a great watch for someone wishing to watch something in his/her alone time.
The film deals with the subject of lust and sexuality very nicely. The performances of the actors too suit the film’s requirements making the cast perfect in their roles. The most interesting thing to notice in the film is the way it treats the secret society. The working and structuring of the society has been done in a very precise manner in the film and the way they infiltrate into the life of normal people is worth noticing.
The film is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV. Although one has to pay some money to be able to watch the film, once having watched, each penny spent feels worth it.
