Actor Manoj Bajpayee believes that audiences are gradually returning to theatres after spending years consuming content on streaming platforms. Speaking during the promotions of his upcoming film Governor, Bajpayee said viewers are beginning to experience “OTT fatigue” and are now looking for entertainment options beyond their living rooms.
The actor’s remarks come at a time when several mid-budget films have surprised the industry with their box office performance. People are still willing to visit cinemas if the film offers a compelling experience. According to Bajpayee, the success of these films proves that the belief that only large-scale spectacles can work in theatres is no longer entirely true.
There is certainly some truth to his argument. After years of endless scrolling and binge-watching, many viewers do appear eager for the shared experience that cinemas offer. Watching a film with a crowd remains very different from watching it alone at home.
At the same time, Bajpayee’s comments should be viewed in context. The actor is currently promoting Governor, a film that is releasing exclusively in theatres. Naturally, both the cast and the makers have a strong reason to champion the theatrical experience. It is also worth noting that tickets for Governor are priced as low as ₹50 in some cases. If audiences turn up, it may reflect not just a renewed love for cinemas but also the appeal of affordable ticket prices.
The bigger picture is that OTT platforms are far from losing their relevance. In fact, Bajpayee himself became a digital superstar through shows like The Family Man. Rather than signalling the decline of streaming, the recent success of theatrical releases suggests that audiences are simply choosing the platform that offers the best experience. Good content remains the biggest draw, whether it arrives on a cinema screen or a streaming app.
