If you ended up feeling “WTH did I just watch?” after finishing the finale of House of the Dragon Season 2, don’t worry, you’re not the only one! We spent eight episodes in the second season and raised our expectations so high that we lost our minds when we didn’t get what we wanted: a big, brutal, explosive battle to end the season. But sadly, we didn’t get what we wanted. Still, don’t worry, we have HOTD Season 3!
Now, the time for talking is over. All signs point towards the HOTD Season 3 premiere, which won’t just open the door, but kick it down with the Battle of the Gullet.
Traditionally, the GOT universe likes to start things off gently. We typically get some slower, more atmosphere-building and character-development-focused episodes at the beginning of a season, just to see who’s plotting against whom, who’s losing their sh*t, or who’s sleeping with whom.
Even the first two seasons of HOTD followed this rhythm. But breaking that tradition might be the smartest move the showrunners ever make. And honestly, they should.
Opening Season 3 right off the bat with a large-scale aerial and naval slaughter would be a significant but much-needed shift, as the makers would be looking to win back the fans who were left disappointed with how Season 2 culminated.
In the past, the “big” episodes, such as the Blackwaters and the Battles of the Bastards, were reserved for the penultimate slots. The rewards for our patience! By flipping the script and starting with the Battle of the Gullet, the show would deliver an earth-shaking premiere for Season 3. It would indeed be a breathless, brutal introduction that mirrors the chaotic reality of the Dance of the Dragons.
The Battle of the Gullet isn’t just any fight. It’s one of the bloodiest maritime conflicts in George R. R. Martin’s lore. Starting here would immediately establish a more action-packed and high-stakes atmosphere for HOTD Season 3.
It raises the floor for the entire season. When the very first hour involves burning fleets and the gut-wrenching loss of key characters, viewers understand that no one is safe and no moment is filler.
Plus, thanks to the ongoing age of “scroll culture”, our attention span has drastically reduced. A premiere that delivers movie-quality spectacle within the first twenty minutes is a guaranteed viral sensation. It creates an immediate “you have to see this” moment that dominates social media and brings in casual viewers who might have felt Season 2 was a bit too much “politics” and not enough “fire”.
By choosing violence (narratively speaking) right out of the gate for Season 3, House of the Dragon can transition from a political drama into a true war epic. It’s a risky move, but in the ‘Game of Thrones’, you either go big or you go home. And for Team Black and Team Green, there’s no turning back now. Stay tuned for more updates.
