Marvel Studios’ upcoming television special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, is all set to arrive on the Disney+ streaming platform (JioHotstar in India) on May 12. And there are many reasons why this Jon Bernthal starrer should be taken more seriously than it currently is.
If we take a good look at the MCU’s slate of upcoming shows, we won’t find many titles, which is not that surprising, considering how Marvel ended up “overdelivering” its content, both in terms of movies and TV shows, over the last 4–5 years, resulting in the creation of “Marvel fatigue”.
While this strategy noticeably strengthened the studio’s content library, it didn’t do any good for the excitement and intrigue fans used to feel before the arrival of any MCU title. In fact, it nearly did irreparable damage to that feeling.
It makes sense why Marvel is scaling back its expenditure on TV projects and is only considering characters that are not only prominent but also have a strong heart-to-heart connection with fans. And without a doubt, Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, is one of them.
Bringing our attention back to the MCU’s upcoming TV titles, there are only a handful of them.
So far, we have official announcements about Vision Quest, Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, Marvel Zombies Season 2, Wonder Man Season 2, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2 (animated series).
Out of these, we know that only Vision Quest and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 would end up receiving the most financial support from Marvel.
On the other hand, we have The Punisher: One Last Kill, led by Jon Bernthal, which would have a significantly smaller budget than most of these announced titles, but it would surely attract plenty of attention because of its complex yet ruthless protagonist, the gore, the bloodshed, the brutality, and the popularity that the character and the overall Punisher franchise have earned in recent years.
Premiering on May 12, 2026, this one-hour special serves as a vital bridge, connecting Frank Castle’s street-level roots to his major big-screen debut in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
By chronicling the gap between Daredevil: Born Again and his future cinematic appearances, the special ensures that his character arc remains grounded and emotionally resonant rather than becoming just a cameo-driven footnote.
What makes this project impossible to ignore is the unprecedented creative control given to Jon Bernthal. Not only does he return as the definitive Frank Castle, but he also co-wrote the script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green.
So, we should expect the makers to keep its gritty, Rated-R DNA intact while also exploring a version of Frank who is trying to move beyond revenge.
With Bernthal himself at the helm of the writing process, the special is being hailed as an authentic, emotionally heavy chapter that respects the “man in the box” philosophy fans have loved since the Netflix era.
Finally, the special marks a significant strategic shift for Marvel Studios. As Disney+ pivots towards fewer, more intentional streaming releases, One Last Kill is being positioned as a prestige “Marvel Television” event.
It introduces iconic comic elements like Ma Gnucci and the return of Curtis Hoyle, while simultaneously addressing the real-world co-opting of the Punisher symbol, a theme Bernthal has expressed deep personal interest in exploring.
To undermine this special is to overlook the most refined, creator-driven, and consequential portrayal of the Punisher to date.
The Punisher: One Last Kill premieres on May 12 on JioHotstar for Indian viewers. Stay tuned for more updates.
