MBC’s Korean drama Perfect Crown is facing growing backlash in South Korea over claims of historical distortion. The controversy has become more serious after a public petition demanding the drama’s removal from all broadcasting and streaming platforms gained massive support online.
According to reports, the petition was uploaded to the National Assembly’s public petition board under the title “Petition Requesting the Suspension of Broadcast and Removal of Content from Media Platforms Due to Historical Distortion Controversy.” Within two days, the petition crossed 33,000 signatures and continued to spread rapidly across online communities.
Many viewers believe the drama presents sensitive parts of Korean history in a misleading way. Although Perfect Crown is set in a fictional version of Korea, critics argue that several scenes and story elements closely resemble real historical events and symbols. This has angered many netizens, who say the series disrespects Korean history and culture.
The petitioner also referred to Article 5 of South Korea’s Broadcasting Act, which states that broadcasting content should help strengthen national identity and promote healthy public values. Supporters of the petition claim the drama failed to meet these standards.
The demands go beyond stopping the TV broadcast. Petitioners are also asking for all VOD and OTT content related to the drama to be removed completely. Currently the drama is streaming on JioHotstar which means it may be removed from there.
If the petition reaches the required number of signatures, it could move into an official review process by authorities.
