The teaser for ZEE5’s upcoming series Brown (helmed by Abhinay Deo) has officially dropped, and it instantly grabs our attention. The newest clip shows Karisma Kapoor stepping into the shoes of a tough female cop might make you think the show is walking down a familiar path.
Indian OTT and cinema have given us some incredibly strong, fierce female officers, most notably Rani Mukerji’s no-nonsense and blunt avatar in the Mardaani series and Shefali Shah’s deeply empathetic, systematic investigation in Delhi Crime. But Brown quickly makes it clear that it is aiming for something entirely different.
What really stands out and separates Karisma’s character from her predecessors is that she isn’t just a resilient cop fighting an external system. She is a deeply broken, shattered individual fighting herself.
The teaser gives us raw, unsettling glimpses of a woman battling massive inner demons. Instead of the typical heroic presentation, we see her spiralling in the dark, turning to liquor and smoking weed just to numb the pain. It is a striking, deeply vulnerable look at a professional who is unravelling on the inside while desperately trying to keep it together on the outside.
Set against the backdrop of solving gruesome crimes, Brown adds a heavy layer of intrigue to the narrative.
We are completely used to seeing Karisma Kapoor in glamorous, high-energy, and comedic roles that defined an entire era of Bollywood cinema. We have simply never seen something like this from her before. She completely sheds her star persona to embrace a gritty, unglamorous, and raw human vulnerability that feels both tragic and captivating.
If this ZEE5 project delivers on the immense promise shown in this teaser and performs well with audiences, Brown could leave a significant impact upon its release. Looking at the sheer depth of the character she is portraying, this could very well end up being recognised as Karisma Kapoor’s best performance ever. Stay tuned for more updates.
