The 2026 BAFTA nominations have officially landed, and as expected, the “Big Four”, including One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme, are leading the charge. However, with the British Academy’s unique voting system and a penchant for honouring local talent, the list is far from predictable.
In a move that mirrors its recent Oscar shutout, Wicked: For Good found itself largely left out in the cold. Despite being a global phenomenon, the sequel failed to secure nods for Best Film, Director, or its leading ladies, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Guillermo del Toro was shockingly overlooked in the Director and Screenplay categories for Frankenstein, even as the film’s star, Jacob Elordi, secured a Supporting Actor slot.
Furthermore, it was a tough morning for international cinema, despite massive critical acclaim, foreign-language gems like It was Just an Accident and Sirat were relegated strictly to the “Film Not in the English Language” category, with Oscar-nominee Wagner Moura notably missing the cut.
On the flip side, the “British” in BAFTA was out in full force. Paul Mescal proved he’s the Academy’s golden boy, nabbing a Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in Hamnet, marking his third nod in just four years.
Meanwhile, the gritty British indie I Swear pulled off the morning’s biggest heist, racking up five nominations. Lead Robert Aramayo found himself in the prestigious company of Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, proving that small-budget passion projects can still roar at the Royal Festival Hall.
The Academy also showed love to the year’s freshest faces. Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another) and Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme) both broke into the performance categories after being overlooked by the Oscars, cementing their status as the new vanguard of Hollywood.
Perhaps the most “meta” moment of the morning belonged to David Jonsson. While co-hosting the announcement, he had to maintain his composure as his own film, Wasteman, was announced as a nominee for Outstanding Debut. It was a class-act finish to a morning defined by high drama and unexpected pivots.
