During the early hours of August 19th 2021, a small budget Malayalam film titled ‘#Home’ released on Amazon Prime Video, directly for streaming. While the movie got decent-to-good reviews at the time, the film quickly went out of our minds when the likes of ‘Tuck Jagadish’, ‘Bhoot Police’, ‘Money Heist’ and many others were rushing to be released on multiple streaming platforms. However, the film has started picking up traction on multiple social media websites, Twitter in particular, so we decided to put out this article stating 4 reasons why you guys should check out ‘#Home’ this weekend.
The Story9
Oliver Twist, a humble patriarch lives with his ailing father, wife and his youngest son. He spends his days looking after his father and tending to his garden. His oldest son, Antony, a film director with one successful film under his belt, is experiencing writer’s block while writing his latest film’s climax. He decides to head home for a fresh start and to meet his family after a long time. Oliver finds it difficult to connect with both of his sons since they are constantly online, while he is technologically challenged. Oliver attempts to connect to his sons by learning how to use a smartphone while Anthony tries to complete his story before his deadline of 7 days.
Lead Cast
‘#Home’ mainly revolves around Oliver and Anthony, but the other two main members of the household – the matriarch, Kuttiyamma and the youngest, Charles are just as important as the other two to this story. One of the reasons why this film is so good is because of the depth Indrans, Sreenath Bhasi, Nalsen K. Gafoor and Manju Pillai all bring to these four characters.
Side Characters & Cameos
While the lead four gave us a nuanced performance, we cannot forget performances of the supporting cast and the cameos. Maniyanpilla Raju, K.P.A.C. Lalitha and Anoop Menon all appear in ‘#Home’ as cameos on screen. They are veteran actors and their presence brings gravitas in many important scenes. Deepa Thomas’s performance as Anthony’s needy girlfriend/fiancé Priya and Vijay Babu’s Dr. Franklin are all funny additions to the movie.
The Underlying Message
While the trailer suggests that ‘#Home’ will only focus on Oliver’s “disability” in learning how to use technology; the movie actually focuses on four things in particular – keep up with the times, don’t forget to connect with your loved ones, depression and home is where one can truly be free. The message of the film focuses on all four, but not in the way you guys might think. The way these messages are woven into the theme of the film is actually beautiful and worth checking ‘#Home’ out for.
