Zee5 is breaking a sensational new series called The Broken News. But, it will be tough for the series to stand out as a prominent example as we have some great films on journalism. The most notable thing about films based on journalism is the impact it leaves.
They might get celebrated by the masses, they might spark a debate on the ethics of media but they never leave an impact. The public still enjoys the toxic content TV media serves them. But that’s for some other discussion.
Here we bring 5 notable films which spotlight the dark and promising side of TV media.
Peepli Live- Netflix
We all remember the good old days from the late 2000s when audiences talked about a film as small as Peepli Live.
The song “Mehangai Daayan” was on everyone’s lips and the film promised a change which could never be executed. Based on the vulture nature of media, the film in a comic tone greatly mocks how journalism works.
No One killed Jessica- Netflix
It was the first week of 2011, and no film released in the first week of any year had ever been successful in Bollywood. But surprise surprise, two ladies spelt the sorcery.
And why not? No One Killed Jessica was a film which showed the power of honest journalism. It proved that if journalists think beyond TRP and sensationalism then they can actually bring changes into society. The film features great performances by Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji which is obvious given the talent they possess.

In hailing or vilifying the media, we often forget that journalists are humans too and they have responsibilities too. To earn money, they might report something which they never wanted. Because their job feeds them and they can compromise on their morals.
Unfortunately, people find it hard to accept. But Page 3 starring Konkana Sen Sharma makes it easier to understand. A must watch, to say the least.
Rann- Prime Video
The film directed by Ram Gopal Varma starred Amitabh Bachchan and Sudeep in the lead role. Although it does not revolve primarily around journalism it gives us great insight into how the media works.
It gives a fair dose of thrill and is unmissable if you love Amitabh Bachchan films.
Dhamaka- Netflix
It is a fairly recent film but if you haven’t watched it then you must. Kartik Aaryan drags himself out of the Kartik Aaryan zone and delivers a good performance.
The show is brutal and unapologetic in its portrayal of the media. It is dark, and thrilling and forces us to think about whom are we trusting?
Thus, this list contains all aspects of media one needs to know about. Do you think that Zee5’s The Broken News can deliver something new and will not repeat something which we already know about?
Regardless, the series is just a Friday away as it drops on 10th June.
