Chhorii (2021)
Helmed by Vishal Furia, ‘Chhorii’ features Nushrratt Bharuccha in the lead role and follows a pregnant woman who escapes along with her husband to a remote village in a house that is surrounded by eerie sugarcane fields. The woman soon begins to experience some strange phenomenon and past secrets begin to unravel during her quest to investigate the mystery.
Tumbbad (2018)
The visually opulent, period horror film set in the 1920s period is essentially a simple tale of greed, beautifully disguised as an unadulterated horror film. The film’s storyline revolves around Vinayak Rao (Sohum Shah) and his perpetual greed for the apparently eternal wealth that is stored underneath a crumbling castle. However, to earn a few gold coins, every time he must confront a dreadful entity named Hastar.
The Priest (2021)
Helmed by Jofin T. Chacko in his directorial debut, the mystery horror movie features veteran actor Mammootty in the role of the titular priest who joins hands with a police officer to investigate a series of mysterious suicides. But as the story progresses, it becomes known that there is more to the story than meets the eye.
1920 (2008)
Somewhat reminiscent of the cult horror film ‘The Exorcist’ and set in the 1920s period, this Vikram Bhatt’s well-intentioned directorial follows a newly married couple (Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma) who relocate to an eerie mansion in Palanpur. Soon after, the woman begins to feel a strong supernatural presence in the house and later gets possessed by an evil entity. The husband takes the help of an exorcist to save his wife from demonic possession.
Ek Thi Daayan (2013)
Directed by Kannan Iyer, the film’s plot follows a magician’s (Emran Hashmi) disturbing past which begins to adversely affect his stage performance. Thereafter, he undergoes hypnosis and revisits his childhood days, and eventually learns about the demon caretaker woman who shattered his childhood. In the present day, when a friendly woman enters his life, he gets a strong feeling that the same demon from his childhood is back in his life. The film also featured Huma Qureshi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, and Pawan Malhotra in pivotal roles.
