5 Must-Watch Survival Movies Streaming on Indian OTT (Part-2)

Survival movie is a sub-genre where the film’s lead character(s) struggles to survive in an extreme situation. Owing to its theme, these kinds of films are intense and dark yet gripping in their execution. In the follow-up to our earlier article (part-1), we have compiled for our readers another list of five must-watch survival movies you can watch on Indian OTT platforms.

Life of Pi (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)

The visually opulent film starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, and a Bengal Tiger was helmed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee (Hulk, Brokeback Mountain). It revolves around a young man Pi Patel, who is transporting his father’s zoo animals from India to Canada. Following a shipwreck, he finds himself sharing the same lifeboat with a fellow survivor – a Bengal Tiger, with whom he forms an unlikely alliance. The survival story and the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker – the Tiger, forms the crux of the film’s plotline.

Into the Wild (Streaming on Netflix)

Helmed by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn, ‘Into the Wild’ is an on-screen adaptation of John Krakauer’s 1996 book of the same name. The film chronicles the true story of an American adventurer Chris McCandless, who traveled across North America and later on hitchhiked into the Alaskan wilderness hoping for a nomadic existence. Emile Hirsch had essayed the titular role in the film.

The Impossible (Streaming on Lionsgate Play)

The film revolves around the Bennett family vacationing in Thailand and their agonizing experience following the outbreak of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It features Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor as the distressed parents of three boys and narrates their desperate endeavors to keep their family safe. You’ll also see a very young Tom Holland as the 12-year-old son in his live-action feature film debut.

The Grey (Streaming on MX Player, Lionsgate Play)

This gripping survival movie features ‘Taken’ actor Liam Neeson as John Ottway, who works for an Alaskan oil company as a sharpshooter of the titular grey wolves. After his plane crashes in the far-off Alaskan wilderness, he must use his very particular set of skills to protect a group of oil workers from being hunted by killer Canadian grey wolves.

Flight (Streaming on Netflix)

The edge-of-the-seat drama was directed by one of the most gifted storytellers across the globe – Robert Zemeckis (Director – Back to the Future, Cast Away). The film follows an alcoholic but brilliant airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington), who saves almost everyone onboard a malfunctioning airliner by using extraordinary skills. However, the investigation reveals some surprising facts about the airline crash. Although it’s not an out-and-out survival movie, just the plane crash sequence itself makes this film worthy of being included on this list.
