Today is the 21st of August 2021, which is also the date where Malayalis around the world celebrate the festival of Onam. We expect many regional OTT platforms such as Neestream, ActionOTT and many other Malayalam oriented streaming platforms to release new content for the weekend, and will hope that many Keralites will take the time to check them out. For this list, however, we are going to point out 7 Malayalam movies which are already available for streaming to be checked out for this festival weekend:
Kuruthi
A controversial first pick, but an important one as well. This Amazon Prime streaming feature film talks about various social issues that are plaguing the state as well as the country. The film follows Ibrahim, a man who is having difficulty maintaining his faith after the death of his wife and daughter. He gets an even bigger test of faith when he meets the deranged Laiq.
Aadu
Comedy films are the norm during Onam releases and Aadu is one of the better Malayalam comedy films that was released during the second half of the 2010s. Follow Shaji Pappan and his team as they win a tug of war match. They receive a cash prize, a trophy and a female goat as a reward. However, things take a dark turn when the team members decide to butcher the goat. Check this movie out on Disney+ Hotstar.
Rajamanikyam
No Onam list is complete without a Mammooty film, and Rajamanikyam is one of his better ones. A frequently televised film, this movie follows Bellary Raja, a seemingly unknown man who gets named the executor of the will of a wealthy businessman, Rajarathnam Pillai. The man has to settle the disputes between Pillai’s children and split the property between the two. This movie is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Lucifer
Similar to Mammootty, watching a Mohanlal film is also a must, during most Onams. And the Amazon Prime streaming Lucifer is a good choice. A mysterious man named Stephen steps up to take over as head of a powerful political party after the previous leader dies.
#Home
This movie is only a couple of days old, but it is a good addition to this list. Onam is a festival celebrated by families, and #Home is a good family-oriented film. We follow Oliver Twist, the patriarch of a family, who wants to be tech-savvy so as to spend more time with his two sons who spend more time on their phones than with their loved ones.
Ayyappanum Koshiyum
A new favourite among Malayalis, follow police officer Ayyappan and retired army havildar, Koshy as they go at each other when their egos clash. This movie can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Premam
Onam is also a time when a lot of romance films release as well. In Premam, we follow George, whose first love turns out to be a disappointment. Malar, a college lecturer, eventually rekindles his love interest. His journey takes him through several stages, finally helping him find his purpose in life.
