Amazon Studios, the independent production entity of Amazon Prime Video, has been at the forefront of producing films in the USA that are primarily meant for release in theatres. Honey Boy, The Handmaiden, The Goldfinch, Suspiria, are some of the stellar theatrical films produced by Amazon. Amazon Prime Video has now joined hands with Akshay Kumar to produce its first Indian theatrical release – the upcoming Ram Setu.
Amazon Prime Video has been looking to make an entry into the business of making theatrical films in India for a couple of years now. A Covid-curtailed 2020 was hardly the right time to venture into new territory. Cut to 2021, the theatre business is looking up, new films are being announced in quick succession, and filmmakers are looking for a fresh infusion of working capital to give wings to their dreams.
To cut a long story short, it is the perfect time for a deep-pocketed content company such as Amazon Prime Video to get into the Indian film business. Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu presents the ideal opportunity. Akshay Kumar is a megastar, his films sell, and Ram Setu is an intriguing subject. What’s more, Akshay Kumar is playing an archaeologist in the film, and we can already imagine that the narrative will have a hint of mystery and the thrill of discovery.
Thus, it makes ample sense for Amazon Prime Video to kick off its theatrical production business with Ram Setu. The film will be directed by Abhishek Sharma (Parmanu, Zoya Factor), creative produced by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, and co-produced by Amazon Prime Video, Lyca Productions (2.0), Cape Of Good Films, and Vikram Malhotra’s Abundantia Entertainment. Ram Setu stars Akshay Kumar, Nushratt Bharuccha and Jacqueline Fernandez in pivotal roles.
Here’s Amazon Prime Video’s official announcement on social media, of its theatrical film productions venture –

Interestingly, Amazon Prime Video also has another mega plan in the pipeline – that of owning theatres. It was in the news last year when Amazon Prime expressed interest in buying the troubled in AMC Theatres chain. Though the deal hasn’t gone through, Amazon is understandably keen to get ownership of theatres.
Here’s wishing the streaming giant all the success in its new journey of being a theatrical film producer.
