ESL or the European Super League looks to be dead even before it took off from the ground. With all 6 English football clubs involved, rescinding their support for the Newly proposed “Super League” yesterday, which was followed by Inter Milan and Athletico Madrid today, continuing with the remaining 4 or so clubs will be illogical. The broadcasting rights for this proposed league was to be decided between Facebook, Amazon Prime, Disney, Netflix and Comast owned Sky, but now it looks like the project is dead in the water before it even took off from the ground.
The last couple of days have been filled with drama in the footballing world. The proposed European Super League idea has been floating around for some time now but the surprise joint announcement of its launch by the biggest clubs in the world – AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur shook the footballing community by storm. The fact that these clubs made this bold statement without the approval of the UEFA, FIFA or even their own national football associations was a scandal all on its own.
Fortunately for all football fans and players, the ESL has failed spectacularly due to the massive hit back the clubs received in their home country and among their own fans. With the public outcry being humongous, all the English clubs involved caving within 48 hours. This is good news for the fans, but bad news for the OTT giants involved.
The proposed plan of the World’s biggest clubs facing each other does sound exciting and that plan attracted the aforementioned streaming supergiants and the ESL’s doorsteps. But with no more Super League, it looks like the previously mentioned OTT platforms will have to find another way to break into the competitive world of football streaming rights.
