The critically praised Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy, has debuted online on Amazon Prime. Zoya Akhtar has directed the movie which is set in the Dharavi of Mumbai with a rap backdrop. It is based on the real life of rappers from that area.
Having watched the movie, we feel Gully Boy is an above average movie. The setting, performances and character designs and the whole execution is excellent, but the core emotion, the driving point and story is as cliché as it gets. The rap backdrop provides the new aspect, and that sure does make one engaged to the proceedings.
The acting is consistently good by everyone. The casting is spot on. Ranveer Singh shines the brightest, but before his ‘time arrives’ Siddhant Chaturvedi totally steals the show. He dominates everyone for the brief moment he logs the centre space. The role was initially envisioned for Ranbir Kapoor. We can only rue at the fact that a golden opportunity was missed. Digression aside, Ranveer truly rocked the show towards the end. His desperation for success could be felt. Alia Bhatt was reliable as usual and managed to impress amidst the crowd.
Gully Boy was a box office success with collections of over 135 Cr Nett. It is an easy one time watch. If you want to watch a movie this weekend from Bollywood, and you haven’t seen Gully Boy, make sure it is on the list.
