Amazon Prime Video has just launched Channels service in India, making India the twelfth country after the USA, UK, Japan, Canada, Germany, etc., to host Prime Video channels. By doing that, streaming giant Amazon Prime Video has now become a content aggregator in India. Hereafter, eight subscription-based OTT platforms will now be available on Amazon’s mobile app alongside its website.
Amazon Prime Video’s app has accordingly been updated in India which now features a separate menu to enlist for eight OTT apps namely Lionsgate Play, Discovery Plus, Eros Now, Hoichoi, Manorama Max, Docubay, Shorts TV, and Mubi. By paying an additional subscription fee, Amazon Prime Video users can now opt for these OTT services through a single billing mechanism. The current subscription fee for these eight channels stated in Amazon app is as follows:
Lionsgate Play – Rs. 699 per year
Discovery Plus – Rs. 299 per year
Eros Now – Rs. 299 per year
Hoichoi – Rs. 599 per year
Manorama Max – Rs. 699 per year
Docubay – Rs. 499 per year
Shorts TV – Rs. 299 per year
Mubi TV – Rs. 1999 per year
The good thing about these plans is that they are being offered by Amazon at discounted introductory prices. For instance, the original subscription fee for Discovery Plus is Rs. 399/year, for Hoichoi it’s Rs. 899/year, for Manorama Max it’s Rs.999/year, for Mubi it’s Rs.3588/year, for Eros Now it’s Rs.399/year, for Docubay it’s Rs.999/year, and for Shorts TV it’s Rs.499/year.
Regarding the latest offering, the country manager of Amazon Prime Video Gaurav Gandhi had said that “Our journey in India over the past four-and-a-half years has taught us that customers here are hungry for content, and while we’re serving our own range of exclusive originals and movies, they may be demanding programming that goes beyond those. Acting as a marketplace for entertainment is the next step for us.”
Not only the Indian OTT audiences but these OTT platforms will also likely benefit from the vast reach of Amazon and its technical expertise. The inclusion of these eight OTT platforms on Amazon will also help the giant to be the streaming home for more than a whopping 10000 titles for the platform.
Another important advantage besides the single billing benefit for Amazon Prime Video users will be that now viewers won’t have to manage separate user names and passwords for the aforementioned eight OTT subsections as the Amazon app will become a one-stop shop for these streaming platforms.
India has a total of about 60 OTT platforms, and we are hopeful that besides these eight OTT channels on the Amazon app, a greater number of streaming platforms, which do not possess similar marketing and technical infrastructure like Amazon, might be available for Amazon Prime Video users in the near future. So, the launch of Channels service at Amazon Prime Video India seems to be a win-win situation for OTT customers, OTT platforms, and Amazon alike.
