In case you guys missed it, the upcoming Andhadhun remake, ‘Bhramam’ will be released directly for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, next month. This Malayalam remake will drop three weeks after the Telugu remake of the same hit film, ‘Maestro’, premiered on the OTT platform, Disney+ Hotstar. The Telugu movie was met with mixed reviews – since many of the critics thought that the minds behind Maestro played it safe by creating an almost exact copy of the Hindi original. It will be interesting to see how Maestro’s reception will vary from Bhramam’s.
Maestro wasn’t all that bad though. With the story still known, it was interesting to view the film with different actors and in a different language. The movie failed to provide us with the big thrills (one of Andhadhun’s biggest “selling points”), especially since we could see the twists coming and there were no changes in the plot to keep us heavily absorbed. With quite a few drawbacks seen in the first remake; releasing another South Indian Andhadhun remake, so soon after Maestro sounds like a recipe for disaster.
While Mollywood has been known to be a creative film industry (in the recent years) – deviating from the original source material is going to be a real challenge, especially since the Bollywood original was so good. While we feel that the Bhramam filmmakers have no other option but to make plot changes, we are sure that even they didn’t think the Malayalam film would release on OTT so soon after Maestro. This means we could be looking at a “Malayalam Maestro” – and we are sure, in this case that the third time is “not” the charm.
Maestro is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.Bhramam will make its OTT debut on Amazon Prime Video on October 7th 2021.
