Before their much-talked-about satirical comedy Netflix film ‘Don’t Look Up‘, star Jennifer Lawrence and writer-director Adam McKay were in the process of developing another much-publicised film. It was an ambitious film ‘Bad Blood’, that centred on the shocking story of Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the super-controversial Silicon Valley start-up, Theranos.
However, for reasons best known to the two collaborators, that film was put on the back-burner. Jennifer Lawrence and Adam McKay soon got busy with Don’t Look Up, funded by the deep-pocketed content giant, Netflix.
Now, another cash-rich player has jumped on board to play saviour for the high profile film. Apple TV Plus, the streaming arm of tech behemoth Apple Corp, has acquired ‘Bad Blood’ for release on its platform. Adam McKay will write, direct and produce ‘Bad Blood’. Jennifer Lawrence will co-produce, along with her producing partner Justine Polsky. Apple Studios, Legendary Pictures and Will Ferrell are also producers on the film.
McKay and Lawrence’s film tells the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. It will be based on Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Carreyrou’s book, ‘Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies In A Silicon Valley Startup’. Carreyrou had famously broken the news of the massive scam that was Elizabeth Holmes’ Theranos. Jennifer Lawrence will play Holmes in the movie.
For those who don’t know, Elizabeth Holmes was the founder of Theranos, a Silicon Valley startup that promised to revolutionise the field of blood tests by developing small automated devices that could perform a wide range of tests using only a finger prick of blood. The devices were later revealed to be just a sham. Holmes was charged with deceit and exaggerating the success of her blood-testing device, and her company was dissolved for fraud.
