Netflix is always up and ahead with its content. From every single genre, Netflix always keeps on upgrading the library with brand new stuff from all the genres that’s available. One of the major money-minting content for Netflix has always been Asian content. Be it Indian, Japanese Anime, Korean dramas, Chinese dramas, or movies and series from all these areas have been major hits worldwide. Now, it is not an unknown fact as to how famous Korean content has grown to be and with Netflix investing more in the Korean domain, we are bound to get more amazing K-Dramas.
As for August, we already have two big K-dramas coming in, and both of these two are spearheaded by pairs of actors that are superstars in the arena. The K-dramas we are talking about are “D.P” starring Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo hwan in the leads and “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” starring Shin Min-a and Kim Seon-ho. While D.P. is slated to release on 27th August, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha on the other hand is slated for 28th August release. So, we can clearly say the k-dramas will be absolutely back to back.
While D.P. is more of a Netflix Original, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha isn’t. It will be aired on a cable TV channel in Korea, and internationally on Netflix. It is safe to say Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha might be getting more audience than D.P. Also, not to forget the genres they both have. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha is more of a summer, romantic comedy series that stars two big names Shin Min-a and Kim Seon-ho, both of whom have been adored by the audience for quite some time now. On the other hand, D.P. is a tad bit dark and gritty and is action-packed. It doesn’t really have an active romantic story, since most of its focus is on the action and running around of the characters.
The last time Netflix had such an intense K-Drama fight was back in February when the streaming platform simultaneously saw the release of Song Joong-ki’s “Vincenzo” and Park Shin-hye’s “Sisyphus: The Myth”. We clearly saw that Vincenzo won the public’s love but Sisyphus: The Myth was able to gather more acclaim and ratings. The same might be the case with “D.P.” and “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”. The story of “D.P.” is quite unique since it tells the lives of runaway soldiers from South Korea’s compulsory military enlistment; many would be able to relate to this, especially the men of their country.
Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha also does have the potential of it getting big, but the love story factor is tried and tested. The things that will pull people towards the series can be the chemistry, the puns (on which the entire series is based), and the return of phenomenal actors.
As for us, suggesting which one to see, it would be giving “D.P.” a chance, with it’s unique story and actions. But, if you want something lighter and fun, “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” should be your go to series. It would be interesting to see though how both the series are showered with love from the audience and all of it will only be revealed when both the series drop on 27th and 28th respectively.
