The nominations for the 2021 EE British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards have just been announced. The BAFTA Film Awards will be held on 11th April, after having been postponed from the original February 14 date.
The most definite feature of BAFTAs 2021 is that they are the most inclusive list of nominations in the history of the Film Awards. The BAFTA Film Awards received a lot of flak last year for having an all-white nominations list in the primary categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. The Awards were also criticised for nominating only male directors for the Best Director category. The non-inclusive nature of the 2020 Awards had sparked outrage on Twitter, with the hashtag #BAFTAsSoWhite trending on Twitter for quite some time.
The British Academy Of Film And Television Arts overhauled the voting process for 2021 in an attempt to make the Awards more inclusive. The results are there for all to see in the list of nominees for BAFTAs 2021 – with 4 female directors competing for Best Director, and a number of POC performers in the best performances categories. Suffice to say, #BAFTAsWhiteNoMore!
