Binged Yearenders: Top 5 Small OTT Hits of 2021

We watched several big-budget productions getting released on OTT platforms this year. Thanks to the ongoing COVID pandemic. But some of them received outstanding critical and public responses. But what about small OTT movies? Yes, we are talking about those films that possessed neither a star-studded cast nor a colossal budget. These kinds of projects often get ignored by the common masses. But a true cinephile knows their worth.

Here are the top 5 small OTT hits of 2021!

5. Cinema Bandi

Platform: Netflix

The directorial duo of Raj and DK requires no introduction in present times. They are known for Go Goa Gone, A Gentleman, Happy Ending, and many more cinematic projects. And the fame of The Family Man has reached new heights. That’s why their decision to produce a low-budget Netflix original surprised everyone. But it was a wise decision too.

Cinema Bandi grabbed the top spot on Netflix India Trendings in the first week of its release. Debutant director Praveen Kandregula shows his talents brilliantly in this one. It tells the story of a rickshaw driver who accidentally gets a high-quality camera. After watching a tv program, he decides to film his low-budget love story.

4. Mandela

Platform: Netflix

This one is Yogi Babu’s career-best movie! Newcomer Madonne Ashwin perfectly balances the political satire tone, acting performances, and the script of the film. A small village in Tamil Nadu faces a unique situation after the election for the village’s president ends up in a tie. A local barber, Mandela, possesses the final vote of the election. Both participating parties try hard to please him and promise to do everything for him. Our leading character takes advantage of the situation and adds various demands to his list. But who won the election? Watch the movie to find out!

3. Home

Platform: Amazon Prime Video

The plot revolves around a middle-class family whose head, Oliver Twist, realises his lack of connection with his children. He thinks that learning today’s technology is necessary to bridge the communication gap between him and his children. His both sons, Antony and Charles, are addicted to their smartphones. The movie beautifully displays how the development of technology has affected many families. It’s been written and directed by Rojin Thomas.

2. The Disciple

Platform: Netflix

You are looking at the best Marathi film of 2021! Emerging director Chaitanya Tamhane proves that is a force to be reckoned with. The movie showcases the journey of a talented Indian classical music vocalist. His dream is to become an excellent artist and gain fame. However, his patience and resilience get tested by the obstacles he faces on his path to success. Academy Award-winning director, Alfonso Cuaron, has also served as one of the film’s executive producers.

1. The Great Indian Kitchen

Platform: Amazon Prime Video

This movie serves as the epitome of women empowerment and gender quality. It showcases the story of a newlywed woman who also happens to be a former dancer. Unfortunately, she is married to a teacher who belongs to a very orthodox and patriarchal family. Soon, she starts realising that she made a mistake by becoming their daughter-in-law.

However, the wife defies all her family’s illogical regulations. Additionally, the movie mentions the verdict of the Sabrimala Temple. She tolerates severe criticism and hardships from her conservative Hindu family. Yet, she manages to rise and start a new life.
