The COVID-19 lockdown has left us all to resort to our favourite pastime; binge-watching, with as many as 43% adults saying they’d prefer watching shows to spend time in lockdown.
But recently research has revealed that binge-watching can lead to adverse effects on our physical and mental well-being. From dull skin, baggy eyes, obesity to drooped shoulders; these are just some of the effects of long term binge watching on our physical health.
The research also analysed data that concluded, men are 35% more likely to get bowel cancer from sitting on the couch and watching TV than those who have an active lifestyle. Another scary statistic is that it can also increase one’s chances of getting diabetes by 30% which can ultimately lead to even serious illnesses.
Binge-watching can take a toll on us mentally as well. Consuming content hours at a stretch can strain our eyes, giving us migraine and needless to say clutter our brains with an overdose of information. If the shows are particularly gruesome or violent it can have a negative effect on us and can ultimately lead to insomnia and other psychological problems.
This research is a wake-up call for all avid binge-watchers to take a break once in a while, exercise and get some much needed Vitamin D so that they don’t suffer the consequences of the “Just one more episode” phenomenon.
It’s important to take care of our bodies while also feeding our brains with good and creative content and striking the balance between the two so that we don’t end up like this twenty years down the line is crucial.
