The Malayalam language mystery thriller ‘CBI 5: The Brain’, 5th installment in the iconic CBI franchise, directed by K Madhu and written by S N Swamy began streaming on Netflix India on 12th of June. The biggest post-pandemic blockbuster ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’ also dropped on Netflix, a day after.
Both the movies swiftly raced into Netflix India Top 10 in a day! Mammootty’s CBI 5 however occupied the First position in the Netflix India overall trending list in a day and hasn’t left the throne since. It’s almost a week and the film is unflinching from it’s position even before the mammoth that is Spiderman: No Way Home. Not only did the film surpass RRR, Stranger Things and Don in this week’s rankings, but also is putting up a toe-to-toe competition to the Hollywood blockbuster.
CBI 5: The Brain stars Mammootty as the iconic role of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer Sethurama Iyer. The film theatrically released last month to mixed reviews. But it seems like Netflix India audience is watching the film in huge numbers despite mixed reception in Kerala’s theatre going audience.
CBI 5 : The Brain much like its predecessors Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988), Jagratha (1989),Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004) and Nerariyan CBI (2005) follows a formulaic investigation. This time Sethurama Iyer tackles a series of killings where victims are connected to each other.
The film co-stars Jagathy Sreekumar as he reprises the role of Dy. SP Vikram (Rtd) ,Mukesh and Sai Kumar reprising their roles of Chacko and Satyadas from the third and fourth installments of the franchise respectively. There are other cast additions like Soubin Shahir, Renji Panickar, Anoop Menon, Dileesh Pothan, Asha Sharath, Kaniha, Ramesh Pisharody etc who were not part of previous CBI films.
