The Malayalam language mystery thriller ‘CBI 5: The Brain’, 5th installment of the iconic CBI franchise, directed by K Madhu and written by S N Swamy began streaming on Netflix India on 12th of June. And the film did the unthinkable in just one day!
It swiftly raced upto number One position on Netflix India Top 10! The film raced past Sivakarthikeyan starrer ‘Don’ which was earlier occupying the #1 position in just one day. Not to mention that Stranger Things lost its number one position to both the films.
The film features Mammootty as he reprises the iconic role of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer Sethurama Iyer. The film theatrically released in the month of may to mixed reviews. But it seems like Indian audience is craving for a watchable thriller and add to the mix Mammootty is coming after his super successful Bheeshmaparvam that released in the month of April.
CBI 5 : The Brain much like its predecessors Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988), Jagratha (1989),Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004) and Nerariyan CBI (2005) follows an investigation that is considered as the most difficult case in Sethurama Iyer’s career. This time Sethurama Iyer has to tackle a series of killings where victims are connected to each other.
The film stars Jagathy Sreekumar in his first movie appearance post his accident. He reprises the role of Dy. SP Vikram (Rtd) , CBI from Sethurama Iyer CBI and Nerariyan CBI. The ensemble cast includes Mukesh and Sai Kumar reprising their roles of Chacko and Satyadas from the third and fourth installments of the franchise respectively. There are other cast additions like Soubin Shahir, Renji Panickar, Anoop Menon, Dileesh Pothan, Asha Sharath, Kaniha, Ramesh Pisharody etc who were not part of previous CBI films.
Swargachithra Appachan produced CBI 5 under Swargachithra Films banner. Jakes Bejoy composed the soundtrack of the film. While it’s commendable that CBI 5: The Brain has managed to crack an audience after it came to Netflix, it’s yet to be seen how long the film sustains in Netflix Top 10 list. While we are not exactly sure if the franchise will extend with a 6th installment in future, there are strong rumours indicating a possible collaboration between K Madhu and Mammootty in immediate future.
