Christopher Nolan has finally found the production studio to finance his upcoming World War II film – Universal Pictures. Once the movie releases, it will be the first Christopher Nolan movie to not be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures in two decades. Universal Pictures and its film chief, Donna Langely, has been moving aggressively to acquire the services of “The Dark Knight” director after Nolan started to look for a studio to work with him, after his dissatisfaction with WB – and needless to say, she succeeded.
Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. have been on the outs since last year – especially since the production company wanted to release his then-upcoming film, TENET, on their streaming service HBOMax. The director-producer argued against that plan successfully and got his wish – the movie was only released in theatres worldwide. But WB registered the film’s earnings as a loss and decided to release all of its upcoming films (in the years 2022 & 2023, apparently) in theatres and HBOMax, both. All filmmakers involved with WB were furious and Nolan was one of them. He didn’t mince his words when he asked about the company’s “dual release” decision and we believe that it is one of the major reasons why he has decided to stop associating himself with Warner Bros.
Universal Studios seems more than happy to release Nolan’s next movie in theatres only, as per the director’s wishes. The film will evolve around the (in)famous physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb” and his role in the development of the atom bomb during World War II. This will be Nolan’s third historical film, after Dunkirk and Prestige. The movie is expected to release around the globe by late 2023 or early 2024. For now, we will have to wait and see to know more about the movie.
