Dhanush’s Maaran Vs Vikram’s Mahaan: Direct-to-OTT Release Clash?

The onset of Covid has seen a number of big-ticket films go the OTT way. Even though Kollywood has seen a good revival of cinemas, especially with the latest Rajinikanth starrer ‘Annaatthe’ doing fantastic business, the biggest issue is still the lack of clear dates for films eyeing major festive occasions. Big stars and production houses are cracking four-film deals with major streaming players, whether it’s actor Suriya’s 2D Entertainment or the latest YashRaj Films, digital releases seem like the new normal. If reports are to be believed, the latest films to join the bandwagon, Chiyaan Vikram’s ‘Mahaan’ and Dhanush’s ‘Maaran’ may see a direct-to-OTT clash this Pongal!

Amid news of the Karthik Subbaraj directorial ‘Mahaan’ taking the OTT route, Dhanush fans are extremely upset that ‘Maaran’ may see a similar fate. Where the former is touted to be an action thriller, featuring real-life father-son duo, Vikram and Dhruv, for the first time, the latter is an action thriller, that marks Dhanush’s first collaboration with filmmaker Karthick Naren. While ‘Mahaan’ is said to have picked Amazon Prime Video as their streaming platform, ‘Maaran’ might partner with Disney Plus Hotstar for its digital release. It is being said that both films are seemingly eyeing the occasion of Pongal 2022.

While no official announcements have been made by makers yet, they are expected anytime soon. In this case, ‘Maaran’ will mark Dhanush’s second direct OTT release, after ‘Jagame Thandhiram’. As for ‘Mahaan’, the film was expected to be a career reviver for Vikram’s son, Dhruv, who made a disappointing debut with ‘Adithya Varma’, the Tamil remake of ‘Arjun Reddy’. Evidently, streaming giants have begun targetting the next festival, Pongal and will soon announce their lineup of big-ticket movies. All eyes are on Netflix now, to see what deal they crack.
