RRR helmer SS Rajamouli had plans for making a web series based on Ponniyin Selvan!
Rajamouli is undoubtedly one of the greatest film directors in the history of Indian cinema. From commencing his helming career with Student No. 1 to bestowing a magnum opus like RRR, the director has travelled a long journey and achieved so much. He recently appeared in an interview with Rajeev Masand, which also featured Netflix’s The Gray Man directing duo Anthony and Joseph Russo.
On being asked about his plans for making an OTT project, Rajamouli replied, “I have some ideas which I have been contemplating on taking to streaming, irrespective of the success of RRR. For example, Ponniyin Selvan, which Mani Ratnam sir is doing now, for a long time I had it in my mind to take it to streaming. Because that is the perfect way to tell that particular story. You cannot tell that story easily in a film, but if you have a web series, you can tell the story in 8 hours or 20 hours.”
Well, Rajamouli’s PS series seems like a dream now. Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I will hit the theatres globally on September 30, 2022. It is the first of the two cinematic parts based on the novel of the same name (1955), written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film treasures a staggering cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, and many more.
Ravi Varman has handled the film’s cinematography. On the other hand, legendary composer A. R. Rahman has bestowed his music to the grand project. The upcoming Mani Ratnam film has a gigantic budget of 500 crores.
