As soon as the Maharashtra government announced the reopening of cinema theatres from 22nd October, it’s been raining film announcements for Bollywood! Movie makers and production houses have been quick to announce the release dates of their films, thereby blocking the biggest dates of this year and the next. The Pongal/ Sankranti 2022 festive season is being targeted as the next big date after Diwali and Christmas this year. Some high profile southern movies have already locked the date and now we finally have a Bollywood one too! The first one of the year 2022 will be director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-awaited ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, that’s all set for a theatrical release on 6th January.
Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada of PEN, the biographical crime drama ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ stars Alia Bhatt in the lead, with Ajay Devgn in a pivotal role. The biopic on Ganga Harjivandas, the famous Mafia Queen, also features Emraan Hashmi, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa in supporting roles. It is interesting to note that actor Ajay Devgn plays an important role in SS Rajamouli’s upcoming Telugu period action drama ‘RRR’ too, that features Ram Charan and Jr. NTR along with Bollywood star Alia Bhatt in the lead. The news is that the Pan-India film is also looking at a Sankranti 2022 release, but an official announcement is yet to be made.
The interesting catch however, is that Jayantilal Gada is the producer of both films. Looking at the two films, it seems as though ‘RRR’ may not release during the Sankranti period to avert the clash and could be pushed to a later date. This may be a smart decision since the festive season is already packed with some hugely anticipated south films, namely, Pawan Kalyan and Rana Daggubati’s ‘Bheemla Naayak’, Mahesh Babu’s ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’, Prabhas’ pan-India, multi-lingual ‘Radhe Shyam’ and Ajith’s Tamil action flick ‘Valimai’. So postponing the release date may prove to be a good decision, thereby creating space for Bollywood’s only major release for that period, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.
