There is a much anticipated Malayalam feature film, Joji which is expected to drop in 2021. Starring Mollywood superstar Fahadh Faasil, this movie will be the third Macbeth-inspired Indian film – after Maqbool and Veeram. The contemporary film wrapped its shoot in January and is now looking to release the movie to a wide audience. Latest reports suggest that the producers of Joji will probably go for a direct to OTT release, with Netflix being the main aim of the production house.
This OTT buzz has been going for a long time for another upcoming Malayalam movie featuring Fahadh Faasil – Irul. Just like Joji, Irul too wrapped up its post-production only recently and now looking to release the movie in the best possible viewing environment. Both films are being reported to have approached multiple OTTs and are now going through their available options. For now, we will have to wait for an official announcement to see if both superstar featuring films will take the OTT route.
Joji is directed by Dileesh Pothan, which will make it his third directorial collaboration with the superstar actor, Fahadh Faasil – after Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. Dileesh Pothan is also an accomplished actor and has acted with Fahadh Faasil in multiple hit movies such as Kumbalangi Nights, Trance, 22 Female Kottayam and Varathan among many others. Except for Baburaj and Unnimaya Prasad, the rest of the film cast hasn’t been announced yet, so we do not know if Dileesh will be acting or making an appearance in this film as well. For now, we will have to wait and see.
Adapting from Shakespear, is a trend which has been adopted by multiple film industries, over the decades; Mollywood included. Kaliyattam is a 1997 film starring Suresh Gopi and Manju Warrier, which was inspired by Othello. Annayum Rasoolum is a Fahadh Faasil starrer which was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Other Malayalam movies such as Veeram, Karmayogi and Kannaki have been inspired by other Shakespearean works.
