It seems like it’s a hattrick for Mahesh Narayanan-Fahadh Faasil- Amazon Prime Video! Well you’re damn right! After C U Soon and Malik, the third collaboration of the duo – Malayankunju is heading for a direct digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. Malayankunju is the fourth collaboration between Fahadh Faasil and Mahesh Narayanan after Take Off (2017), C U Soon (2020) and Malik (2021). However, Mahesh Narayanan is only writing the film and is directed by Sajimon Prabhakar.
The Natural Hazard themed survival thriller stars Fahadh Faasil and Rajisha Vijayan in lead roles. Indrans, Jaffar Idukki and Deepak Parambol also are a part of the main star-cast. Mahesh Narayanan also donns the hat of Cinematographer in Malayankunju. A R Rahman makes a come-back to Malayalam Cinema after more than a decade as he scores the background score and music of the film.
The film is centred on a real landslide that took place in the high ranges of Kerala (Idukki) few years ago. The landslide was grave and resulted in the death of families, their homes and kin. Fahadh Faasil plays ‘Anikuttan’, an obnoxious fellow who also happens to be an electrician. Anikuttan gets trapped in the landslide and the movie shows his survival and escape.
Director Fazil (Fahadh Faasil’s father) bank-rolled Malayankunju. During the second schedule of the film on 2nd March 2021, Fahadh met with an accident and suffered a nose injury. The makers of Malayankunju also had released an official trailer around 6 months ago followed by no updates on the film’s release. However, after continued discussions with Prime Video, the makers have decided for an Onam Release (9th September) on the streaming giant. Well it’s a happy news for Fafa fans as it wouldn’t take them enough to see him onscreen after Vikram’s record-breaking success. At the same time, one would wonder if a score-heavy survival thriller like Malayankunju would fit better at the theatres or not.
