Back in June last year Disney+Hotstar came up with this huge announcement of releasing some big budget, big starrer films as part of its Hotstar Multiplex offering. These included seven grand titles, that caught everyone’s attention instantly.
The first amongst these to release on Disney+Hotstar was Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film ‘Dil Bechara‘, followed by Kunal Kemmu’s ‘Lootcase’, Vidyut Jammwal’s ‘Khuda Haafiz’, Alia Bhatt’s ‘Sadak 2’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Laxmmi’. But we wonder where’s Abhishek Bachchan’s ‘The Big Bull’ and Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bhuj: The Pride Of India’?
The OTT platform is surprisingly silent about their release date even after more than six months of announcement of their release on the platform. Several theories and ideas have been cited by general public and trade pundits alike as to why these much hyped films are still on hold.
As in case of ‘The Big Bull‘, it is commonly believed that the film’s release was delayed in view of the massive success of SonyLIV’s ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ that came out in October, 2020. Since the two are based on the life story of the same person, comparisons are bound to happen, and according to speculations, to avoid any major clash, the makers of ‘The Big Bull’ postponed its release. Though the film’s producer Ajay Devgn and star Abhishek Bachchan were seen a little time ago on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ promoting ‘The Big Bull’, there is no update as such on the film’s release date as of yet.
On the other hand, there is Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Bhuj: The Pride Of India’ based on IAF Squadron Vijay Karnik, and is a true story of bravery, patriotism and determination set in the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. The shoot of the film which was paused due to lockdown, had resumed in November last year and since then there hasn’t been any update on the completion of the movie. Most probably, the film is either still stuck in shoot or in the post production process and hence the delay in it’s release.
The fact that the audience has been left hanging, with no official info about the release of both these films for a long time now, raises many questions. Could this delay be due to the backlash Disney+Hotstar received for Sadak 2 and Laxmmi? Or could it be due to the underwhelming response received by most of the Hindi films (except Dil Bechara and Lootcase) released under Hotstar Multiplex?
The questions about the delay of ‘The Big Bull’ and ‘Bhuj: The Pride Of India’ become more relevant when we acknowledge the fact that the movies that were announced much later to have a direct-to-OTT release on Disney+Hotstar under the same Hotstar Multiplex offer, like Mookuthi Amman and Bhoomi, are now up and running on the platform for a while now.
