Today is the death anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Veer Savarkar, who was a well-known Indian independence activist and politician.
Born on May 28, 1883, in Maharashtra, the prominent personality had an extraordinary life from his days in the infamous Cellular Jail, to his restricted freedom in Ratnagiri district, to being the leader of the Hindu Mahasabha and many more important events in his life, until his sad demise in February 1966.

Annu Kapoor had essayed the role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the epic historical drama film ‘Kaalapani’. This hard-hitting film helmed by Priyadarshan was set in the pre-independence era. It revolves around the plight of Indian prisoners who were lodged in the infamous Cellular Prison called Kala Pani, located in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The film featured some fine actors like Mohanlal, Prabhu Ganeshan, Amrish Puri, and Tabu, amongst others. The film is currently streaming on the Disney+ Hotstar, Sun NXT, and MX Player OTT platforms.
Directed by Ved Rahi, the film is based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and was released in the year 2001. The titular role was essayed by Shailendra Gaur while other cast members included Surendra Rajan, Navni Parihar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Pankaj Berry, and Tom Alter amongst others. The film’s plotline revolves around a young man named Abhiman Marathe, who is employed as an executive engineer at MNC, Mumbai. SwatantraVeer Savarkar (Upcoming Film)
On the occasion of the 138th Birth Anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, it was announced that acclaimed director Mahesh Manjrekar will direct a film titled ‘SwatantraVeer Savarkar’. The film is reportedly being produced by Sandeep Singh and Amit B Wadhwani. Ayushmann Khurrana was in talks to star in the biopic.
