After Netflix’s extremely successful innings with German TV show ‘Dark’, the creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar are developing another series for the streaming platform, tentatively titled ‘1899’.
The new series which was originally announced last year as part of an overall deal with Netflix, will be a period drama about a migrant steamship that’s headed from London to New York to leave the old continent. The passengers on board are united by their aspirations and dreams for a better future abroad. Their journey suddenly takes an unexpected turn when they find another migrant ship sailing in the sea – and what they find inside turns their utopian dreams into a nightmare.
Baron bo Odar has revealed the name of the pilot episode on his instagram titled ‘The Ship’. The show will comprise 8 one-hour episodes in its first season.
In a joint statement, Friese and Odar said that, “what really made us connect to this idea was the concept of having a truly European show with a mixed cast from different countries, and at the show’s heart is the question of what unites us and what divides us and how fear can be a trigger for the latter.”
Although there have been no announcements regarding the cast of the show – it may be likely that we see a familiar face or two from ‘Dark’.
The filming for the series is set to start in February, 2021 so a 2022 release on Netflix is likely.
After the immense and enthralling success of ‘Dark’, we can’t wait to see what the creators have in store for us with this horror drama!
