Literary enthusiasts rejoice because an exciting book adaptation is coming soon!
Sony along with actress Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter are producing the 2019 NYT Bestseller novel ‘When Crawdads Sing’ written by Delia Owens. It was Amazon’s most sold fiction book in 2019 as well.
As per reports, the film has found its director in Olivia Newman known for writing and directing ‘First Match’ for Netflix which won the Audience Award for best narrative feature film and the LUNA Gamechanger Award for best female director.
The synopsis of the book is as follows:
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
The story is a crime thriller and heart-wrenching coming-of-age tale that intertwines distinct genres into a compelling read.
“I can’t even express how much I love this book! I didn’t want this story to end!” said Reese Witherspoon in the review of the book as part of her book club Hello Sunshine.
Reese Witherspoon has previously produced successful adaptations such as ‘Wild’ and ‘Gone Girl’ and more recently TV shows like ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ under her banner Hello Sunshine.
The film is still in its initial stages but we can expect more news and announcements in the coming weeks as the project makes progress.
