We are not sure if it has happened yet, but we do know it will happen any day now, especially since Mohanlal starrer, ‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea’ bombed in theatres around the globe. If or rather when this happens, the Dulquer Salmaan starring crime drama, ‘Kurup’, will become the fourth Malayalam film in history to make Rs. 100 crores in the global box office. This will also make Dulquer Salmaan only the third actor to lead a Malayalam film that has gone to make Rs. 100 crores – the other two actors being Mohanlal and Nivin Pauly.
‘Kurup’ was released in theatres on November 12th 2021, a few weeks after theatres reopened in Kerala due to a 6-month “hiatus” (the second wave of the Covid-19 virus hit the South Indian state hard). This Malayalam film revitalized the theatre industry and got a lot of Keralites to theatres after many spent almost 18-19 months without going to a cinema hall due to the coronavirus pandemic. And while critics gave the film mixed reviews, it managed to win over the hearts of many South Indian film lovers.
The film had made back its investment of Rs. 35 crores in just two weeks after the film’s premiere, which then quickly became Rs. 50 crores. 4 weeks in, the box office collection slowed down to around Rs. 75-80 crores. After the previously mentioned film, ‘Marakkar’ was released in theatres, which is the most expensive Malayalam movie of all time; many of the Malayalam film goers started to watch the Mohanlal starrer instead. However, the film quickly flopped and it is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
While ‘Kurup‘ is also streaming on Netflix currently, there are still many theatres that are currently showing this film in theatres. This is currently the most successful theatrically release Malayalam film since Covid-19 hit the globe, so even if ‘Kurup’ hasn’t officially made 100 crores in the box office just yet, the film has made history already.
