With all the recent news coming out of the Netflix camp being their recent adaptations of Japanese manga and anime for their streaming platform, it seems that Amazon Studios has an anime/ manga adaptation of their own (or it could be a coincidence) as an answer. A 10-volume manga series, 23-episode animated series, ‘Hellsing’ is one of the best horror stories to have come out of Japan. The John Wick film series writer Derek Kolstad, has joined the project to develop this live-action feature film.
Hellsing was written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano and published by Shōnen Gahōsha. The series follows the Royal Order of Protestant Knights which was originally led by Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula is reimagined as Alucard, who has bound himself to the Hellsing family, ever since Abraham defeated Alucard, over a 100 years before the story began. Under the leadership of Integra Hellsing, great-grand daughter of Abraham both the knights and the most powerful vampire the world has ever seen, tries to keep England and the world safe from threats like vampires, ghouls and other supernatural meances.
Kolstad has been wanting to adapt the ‘Hellsing’ series for some time now. The American screenwriter-producer has been a fan of the series ever since his brother introduced him to the manda and the anime series. With the involvement of Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, Kolstad looks ready for the challenge.
We still do not have any idea if the film will be dropping straight in Amazon Prime Video or will the production house first release the movie in theaters? There is a very good chance that there could be a hybrid release of sorts for this upcoming live-action adaptation. Most film theaters around the world have set a minimum days of running limit, so the hybrid system might not work out in specific regions. But since this is just the pre-production stage of the film, there is plenty of time for the production company to create a proper release schedule. For now, we will just have to wait and see.
