Gen V will serve as one of The Boys’ spin-off, set to premiere on Prime Video on September 29. Created by the trio of Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Craig Rosenberg, the show will explore the lives of young superheroes of the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, a property of Vought International.
We can point out many reasons why The Boys turned out to be a massive success. One of them is the series’ realistic, satirical, and fresh take on the superhero genre, which looks better than what Marvel and DC have been doing with the genre since their inception, according to some fans. The idea of expanding The Boys franchise with Gen V is exciting, but it also puts the original Prime Video series at risk. Spin-offs like Gen V could become the reason behind the destruction of The Boys.
Yes, The Boys has become a cash cow for Prime Video. This gives the streaming platform and showrunners ample opportunities to expand the superhero franchise as much as possible. Vernon Sanders, one of the key Amazon executives, has confirmed that they have planned to release more spin-off entries to The Boys in future. On the other hand, rumours regarding the main series ending after Season 4 are running wild on social media. If Prime Video is planning to bestow more spin-offs to the fans, then it may also end up deteriorating the uniqueness of the original show.
Gen V will be the second spin-off entry in The Boys franchise after Diabolical. The latter had more one-off stories and did not leave a huge impact on the original series. However, we cannot say the same about Gen V. This one shares a close connection with The Boys. Characters from the original series, like The Deep (Chace Crawford), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie), and Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), will also appear in Gen V. In addition, rumours about Jensen Ackles having a cameo appearance in the forthcoming spin-off as Soldier Boy have surfaced on social media as well. All these characters are important to The Boys’ storyline; their appearance in Gen V could make them less significant in the main show.
Also, we must not forget Prime Video’s plans to expand the franchise. This tactic may force Eric Kripke and his team to bestow more seasons of The Boys to the fans, which could adversely impact the quality of the show.
Most of the control of The Boys franchise is still in the hands of the showrunners. Therefore, we should expect them to focus on those projects only that are necessary to the main storyline. However, shows like Diabolical or Gen V do not fit into this category at all. Stay tuned for more updates.
