Here’s Why “AlRawabi School For Girls” On Netflix Deserves A Watch!

By Binged Bureau - Aug 17, 2021 @ 06:08 pm

Netflix is one streaming platform that has been investing a lot in bringing out the best of the best content from every nook and corner of the world. Netflix, as we all know, has been booming its business in Asia and Asian content and besides Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, Netflix is bringing in more and more Middle Eastern content and these contents have been able to give people an idea of what their lives are about. Earlier, even though it was more action-filled content, now the content has diversified and newer topics are being explored.

One such show comes straight from Jordan titled “AlRawabi School For Girls”. Created by Shirin Kamal and Tima Shomali, the series gives an insight into the lives of young teenage girls of a particular elite school from Jordan. The main point of the show has been to highlight bullying but if you are new to the Arabic content scene, we are giving you 5 reasons why “AlRawabi School For Girls” should be your next watch.

Jordanian Elite School Life

First and foremost, the premise of the entire show throughout all the episodes has been the “AlRawabi School For Girls”. From the looks, classes, teachers, facilities, anyone can make it that it is one elite school in the midst of Jordan. But despite being an elite school, the characters involved in the show have varying layers that quite evidently come out slowly and steadily during the entire show. The importance and qualities of the concept of “elite schools” have been very well preserved in the show and from the looks of it; it is nothing different than any other elite school around the world.

Strong Characters, Crisp Plot

One of the best parts of the series is that it is limited. But even though sometimes it’s limited, makers don’t do quite a job of completely telling the story it was meant to tell. The series was focused on one aspect and that is how bullying has been part of students’ lives irrespective of what and who they are. The show is almost an hour-long with 6 episodes and it makes an easy watch with much fewer complications and more importance into the aspects that it is primarily focusing on. Also, not to mention the characters, the show has done its best with limited ability to introduce inclusion from all types of girls. It has easily brought on screen the most commonly seen characters but all with its own twists and darkness, in a way.

Groovy Arabic Music

More than music, one can say it is the background music that gives the show and the characters a much-needed oomph. Like its Western counterpart, music is not exactly big in the show but it appears in bits and pieces, especially when it is about showing the emotions of a character without any dialogues. Besides that Arabic Rap and hip-hop along with soothing R&B have quite well played their part in the show. The lack of actual songs in the show gave the show more meaning. The background music or the background songs were enough to fill in the voids left by if songs were put in. So, if you haven’t listened to beautiful soulful Arabian tunes, this show might act as a gateway to that.

The Orthodox Culture

We all know Jordan is an Islamic country, but not all women of Jordan need to wear the hijab compulsorily, all the time. With time, it has now become a part of the culture they were brought up in, or if one’s old enough, it’s the women’s choice. Also, interaction with boys, dating, having boyfriends, clicking photos with open hair, making a girl sit at home if the family’s dignity is compromised, dealing with mental health issues, homophobia has been part of the orthodox culture that hasn’t gone away, no matter how elite one is. Besides that questions on how the woman of the house needs to be dominated, how their choices can affect the family but not the boys’ are visible in the show, with the perfect subtlety.

A Take On Bullying

But besides all these, one of the most important things to look out for is the take on bullying. It is not the usual take on bullying that makes it interesting, it is the way it is dealt with. Most shows, especially when you compare it with the western series, if one is the bully, that will be the bully till the end. But this is not the case here, bullying can affect someone in various ways but revenge is one of the major factors that drive some people. Revenge is something so strong that even if the one who did it agrees to it, they won’t forget the pain inflicted on them by them. This is the main motto of the show. Don’t let revenge drive you to the point where it can’t be brought back.
