‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’ is a 2017 released contemporary Malayalam drama that wowed critics around the world for its screenplay, direction, acting, music, cinematography and pretty much anything you can think off. The film went on to win various awards; the main ones among them being three National Film Awards, two Kerala State Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards South. And it was a financial hit as well. So a film such as this shouldn’t be anywhere near the “Hidden Gems” list, but barring hardcore Malayalam film lovers – this film is virtually unheard of.
So what is ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum‘? Well, its literal translation means “Even a stick is a witness”. For more context, check out the film synopsis: Sreeja and Prasad elope and marry, against their family’s wishes. They decide to move away from their home town to build a life for themselves. However, they struggle with their farming business venture and decide to sell Sreeja’s gold chain for money. But on their way to the jewellers, a thief steals her chain.
While the premise is simple, it is perhaps one of the most authentic Malayalam films made in the 21st century. The film is set in a remote village and it takes its time to establish various characters and situations that happen in this village without causing any pacing issues. What’s more, the festival situation, police interrogation, the camaraderie between villages, etc. is quite relatable to a lot of Indians and most of these can be seen in many parts of the country, especially in Kerala.
The movie had two main stars at the time – Suraj Venjaramoodu and Fahadh Faasil. Both play very atypical roles, but they are both incredible. Making her debut in this film is the brilliant Nimisha Sajayan. It is also the first time both Suraj and Nimisha played a couple on screen, way before ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’.
‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’ is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
