As per an announcement made by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, globally admired filmmakers Martin Scorsese and István Szabó will be awarded the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award. The awards will be conferred at the 52nd edition of the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will take place from 20th to 28th November 2021 in Goa.
Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema was instituted to pay homage to the legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Satyajit Ray is rightly regarded as one of the greatest Indian filmmakers of the twentieth century. Besides directing around 36 films, Satyajit Ray also created immortal characters like Feluda and Professor Shonku. The gifted filmmaker eventually won multiple National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and bagged many awards from reputed international film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival.
And these two awardees at this year’s IFFI namely Martin Scorsese and István Szabó truly deserve the honor. Academy award-winning director Martin Scorsese’s impressive repertoire of work includes films such as ‘Raging Bull’, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘The Departed’, and the more recent Netflix film ‘The Irishman’. While eminent Hungarian filmmaker István Szabó also has some fine films under his belt. These include ‘Mephisto’ (1981), ‘Father’ (1966), and ‘Colonel Redl’ (1985), to name a few.
Besides the aforementioned lifetime achievement awards to be conferred on Martin Scorsese and István Szabó, this year’s IFFI will reportedly also invite prominent Indian OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, SonyLIV, Zee5, and Voot to participate in the hybrid event. Moreover, the film festival will also pay homage to late Indian actors like Dilip Kumar, Sumitra Bhave, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Sanchari Vijay, and Surekha Sikri.
