We as Indians are soaring right now and most definitely in the field of OTT and Netflix. Yes, 2020 is the year that India registered the highest viewership of films on Netflix globally. Netflix on Thursday released a statement that said that India has the highest viewership rates in films. Followed by kids content, non-fiction and also Korean Dramas.
India being a country with a very high youth population and regular population in general, OTTs are trying their best to grab the Indian market as the market for content is immense here, since the consumers are huge in number. Over the past few years, Netflix along with Disney+, Amazon Prime Video have brought about cheaper plans to entice the population. This has been the case with music streaming platforms like Spotify too. With cheaper and freer subscriptions, the population that are attracted towards these are easily brought to the game for viewership and this has worked very well and in favour of the streaming giants.
Monika Shergill, Netflix India’s Vice President for Content in her blogpost mentioned that, “India has the highest viewership of films on Netflix globally and over the last year, 80 percent of our members in India chose to watch a film every week.” Along with this, this year the pandemic and lockdown forced people to spend more time at home, since schools and offices shut down. This is also considered a very important factor for the viewership rates.
In her post she also added that “Raat Akeli hai” was the most popular thriller for the streaming site. “Extraction”, “Malang” and “The Old Guard” shared the top positions for the most popular films in the action genre. “Ludo”, though was recently released but it has easily snatched the crown for the most popular comedy film.
While in the regional sector, India had ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’ (Telugu), ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ (Tamil), ‘Kappela’ (Malayalam), and ‘Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya’ (Telugu) among other films that featured in India’s Top 10 row.
Notable increases were seen in the non-fiction genre as it grew more than 250 percent in 2020 over 2019. The viewership of Korean Drama Section too increased more than 370 percent in 2020 than the previous year. Along with it there was a 100 percent increase in the kid’s content viewership. Also, there was a very notable increase in the viewership for the anime content on Netflix.
The two most famous series that ruled 2020 were “Dark” and “Money Heist”. The former was on the top 10 row for 95 days while the latter was on the row for 170 days.
