Two recent big ticket Hollywood films namely ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ had their respective theatrical releases some time back. ‘Indiana Jones 5’ starring veteran actor Harrison Ford in the titular role was released on 30th June. On the other hand, ‘Mission Impossible 7’ starring Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise came out around two weeks later on 12th July, that is, just more than a week before the two box office blockbusters ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ were released.
‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ grossed around $375 million globally and ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ performed better and has collected around $523 million so far at the box office worldwide.
However, in spite of the decent theatrical revenues of Disney’s ‘Indiana Jones 5’ and Paramount’s ‘Mission Impossible 7’, both these films are expected to still lose around $100 million each in their theatrical runs, as per a recent report by Variety.
Interestingly, the latest ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Mission Impossible’ movies were made on a production budget of around $300 million each. Now, in case you are wondering how these films are still expected to lose $100 million, then let us tell you that the cost of marketing these films was around a whopping $100 million each. So, it looks unlikely as of now that the two big budget films will end up breaking even with respect to their theatrical runs if the marketing expenses, etc. are also taken into account.
On the brighter side, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ are expected to compensate for their theatrical losses as both these movies will generate decent bucks on their cable and streaming licensing deals. So, from a long-term perspective, these expensive ventures are expected to eventually turn out to be more valuable undertakings for their stakeholders. But it’s a waiting game until then.
