Is RRR Behind Pushpa’s Early OTT Release On Amazon Prime?

Allu Arjun‘s Pushpa: The Rise is set to be made available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 8 PM on the 7th of January. Amazon Prime Video had already dropped an official announcement on the same earlier today. Interestingly enough, Pushpa is arriving on OTT just 3 weeks post its theatrical release. Now, here is an interesting update on how Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Jr NTR‘s RRR played a decisive role in Pushpa’s early OTT release.

As per initial agreements, Pushpa was supposed to hold the lion’s share of cinema theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till the arrival of RRR. The idea was to allot all the major centers to RRR from the 7th of January. This would have meant Pushpa would be losing almost every theatre in the Telugu states to RRR from 7th January. Accordingly, the makers of the Allu Arjun starrer struck a deal with Amazon Prime Video in such a way that the film will be arriving on the platform on the 7th of January. This is exactly how RRR played a decisive role in the early OTT release of Pushpa.

But as the Covid situation continued to deteriorate, RRR’s release was postponed. And in the meanwhile, Pushpa kept faring surprisingly well in the Hindi circuit. With this in mind, the makers of Pushpa asked Amazon to postpone the OTT release. But the OTT giant had turned down the request. They did agree to delay the OTT release of the Hindi version upon multiple requests from the makers.

On a related note, we are hearing that Amazon Prime acquired Pushpa: The Rise’s post-theatrical digital streaming rights for a whopping Rs 22 crores. Amazon Prime is now hoping that Pushpa will manage to impress the pan-India OTT audience.
