‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings’ was released in theatres worldwide on September 2nd 2021… And it proved the MCU doubters wrong. Many expected Marvel Studios to have a drop off in content quality after the releases of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. And after ‘Black Widow’s’ reception, the aforementioned statement seemed to ring true. But the critical and financial success of ‘Shang-Chi‘ has changed all that for the moment. So was it a sign that ‘Black Widow‘ was just an unfortunate hiccup for the MCU?
Well, as unfortunate things go, the coronavirus pandemic hitting the globe is pretty damn unlucky; especially for a female lead superhero film that was going to go head to head against DC’s Wonder Woman at the time. Both film productions got hit hard due to the delay and after ‘Black Widow’ was finally released, it took the film a long time to break even and make a profit. The film is currently considered a flop (too harsh) and is rated alongside other Marvel films like ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘The Incredible Hulk’.
However, ‘The Eternals’ have released in theatres recently and it seems to be getting a lot of bad reviews as well. Still, the film’s poor critical reception has not changed the minds of many – and the film has easily made back its production cost and started to earn profit as well. And according to Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to be loving the film with an 80% rating compared to the 47% rating the critics are giving. But it is the second film from Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get bad reviews. And there have been only three Phase IV films released so far.
So, while Black Widow has been an unfortunate hiccup, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Disney owned production company either. Still, ‘Shang-Chi’ is an example that Marvel Studios have managed to attract some talented filmmakers who can create brilliant films. And with how people have reacted to the trailer for the upcoming ‘Spide No Way Home‘, we have a feeling that this upcoming MCU feature is going to set some box-office numbers – even with the Covid-19 restrictions. Hopefully, we will get the answer to our question by the end of this year.
