Shoojit Sircar’s eagerly anticipated film ‘Sardar Udham’ starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role is geared up to start streaming on the Amazon Prime Video platform from 16th October onwards.
As you might already be aware that Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary who had assassinated former lieutenant governor of Punjab Michael O’Dwyer in London. The assassination was done to avenge the mass killings of many Indians at the barbaric Jallianwala Bagh massacre that happened on 13th April 1919 in Amritsar.
Before Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Sardar Udham’, there have been a few films that have portrayed the great martyr Sardar Udham Singh and the abominable Jallianwala Bagh incident.
The most recent amongst them was the 2000 film titled ‘Shaheed Udham Singh: Alias Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’ in which Raj Babbar had essayed the titular role. The film also featured popular singer Gurdas Maan (as Bhagat Singh) and proficient performers like Amrish Puri (as Sufi Saint), Shatrughan Sinha (as Mohammed Khan), Tom Alter (as Brigadier General Edward Harry Dwyer), and Juhi Chawla (as Noor Jahan).
Prior to Raj Babbar’s aforementioned film, in the year 1977, there was another film titled ‘Jallian Wala Bagh’. As the title suggests, the film was based on the Amritsar massacre besides also being a semi-biopic of the Indian revolutionary Udham Singh. In this film, veteran actor Parikshit Sahni had played the role of Udham Singh. ‘Jallian Wala Bagh’ also featured Vinod Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Gulzar, and Deepti Naval in important roles.
In addition to ‘Shaheed Udham Singh: Alias Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’ and ‘Jallian Wala Bagh’, a third film that was released a year before the latter, that is, in 1976, was the Punjabi film ‘Sarfarosh: The Story of Shaheed Udham Singh’ that revolved around the legendary Indian revolutionary Udham Singh.
Shoojit Sircar’s dream directorial project ‘Sardar Udham’ is ostensibly the most mainstream biographical film to be released on the life story of Udham Singh. The film’s trailer and the posters featuring Vicky Kaushal (as Udham Singh) and Amol Parashar (as Bhagat Singh) give a vibe that it’s going to be a well-deserved homage to the legendary Indian revolutionary.
