Amazon Prime unveiled a slate of films, documentaries and shows that will be released on its platform (in India) during the upcoming festive season leading up to Diwali. While there are many highly anticipated movies releasing on Amazon Prime Video, starting next month, Suriya’s upcoming ‘Jai Bhim’ has to be the most awaited South-Indian film of the year. Especially after the success of his previous Amazon Prime direct-to-OTT release, ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which ended up becoming one of the best Indian films of the year. While the release date for this upcoming film hasn’t been confirmed, we do know that the film is premiering in November – which could make it a Diwali release.
The T. J. Gnanavel directed feature film, ‘Jai Bhim’ will be produced by Suriya himself, which could explain the direct-to-OTT release as well. After the direct-to-OTT released of ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ and the aforementioned ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which were both produced by Suriya via his production company, “2D Entertainment”, the Tamil theatres associations gave a lifelong ban to Suriya and they would not screen any film which stars or is produced by him. While tensions have eased somewhat, the Tamil superstar isn’t taking any chances and is releasing ‘Jai Bhim’ directly for streaming on Amazon Prime and will be hoping for a response similar to his previous OTT outing, ‘Soorarai Pottru’.
This upcoming Tamil courtroom drama will feature Suriya as a lawyer who fights for tribal communities. The title, Jai Bhim, is a slogan used by the Dalit movement, so we can expect a film based on the current social issue of caste division as well as its political relevance. Suriya will be joined by Prakash Raj and Rajisha Vijayan in ‘Jai Bhim’. With how selective Suriya is with his movies, we expect the political drama to do well on Amazon Prime Video. So, mark your calendars this Diwali – ‘Jai Bhim’ is coming.
The previously mentioned “Amazon Prime Video list” starts off with the upcoming Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer – ‘Bhramam’, which is expected to release in the month of October. Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Sardar Udham’ and Emraan Hashmi-starrer supernatural horror movie ‘Dybbuk’ will follow ‘Bhramam’. The Tamil films ‘Udanpirappe’ and the above mentioned film, ‘Jai Bhim’ will follow.
